The Way of Remembering a Trip by Taeho Noh

Iceland, how many chances will be given to anyone to tread on this land? This small northern Island is located 1,000km away from the Scandinavian peninsula. Even if many people keep it on their bucket lists, to travel there to see the magnificent nature, snowfields, and northern lights in Iceland, they tend to hesitate for a moment to tick off the list they’ve dreamed of. Because of a long traveling distance, it would be too tightly scheduled for such short vacation days. Spring of 2016, I was living in Helsinki, Finland, to study. After the spring semester, I was about to go back to Korea, and I probably felt something by instinct that this Easter holiday would be my only ultimate chance in my lifetime of achieving one of my bucket lists, ‘traveling to Iceland.’ I’ve never shared my bucket list with anybody, but it wasn’t hard to find people to join the trip. As soon as one of my friends talked about this idea, it turned out that 9 Korean students quickly formed a group. 9 Korean students for a 9-seater van, the biggest vehicle we could rent, for the expedition to Iceland.
Honestly, not every one of us knew each other very well. A few of us were very close to each other, and there were people I met for the first time at the airport of Helsinki on the day we left for Iceland. However, we were the expedition members with the same dream, ‘traveling to Iceland.’ Even if every member had lived enough time in Scandinavian countries to get used to the northern environment and its culture, Iceland in itself already made everyone get excessively excited and thrilled. Overwhelmed with the excitement, on the day of departure, I asked everyone to take as many photos and videos as possible with their own smartphones and digital cameras so that I could make a video clip of our monumental road trip. The expedition started with this announcement, and this one-week Ring Road tour in Iceland finished without any serious accident except being isolated in the middle of the snow in northern Iceland for several hours.
However, as each of us got back into the harness and had to live hectic days until the end of the semester after the expedition, the memories and feelings from Iceland faded in time and patterns of everyday life. I finally returned to Korea after one year of study in Finland, and all the members of the expedition headed out their own way. Since then, I have never contacted them as we used to mingle together in Helsinki and Iceland. Despite our estranged relationship, my ostentatious announcement before everyone at the airport about making a video clip became a debt in my mind for a long time. I did not think that any of us remember or care what I told them at that moment; however, I wanted to keep my word anyway. And above all, I wanted to collect all the memories from Iceland and make a video that contains the beauty of what we experienced there. Three years after our expedition, I finally sat down in front of my desk, looked into my old external hard drive where I kept all the photos and videos from every member and started making a short video clip.
In the videos recorded, there were moments of Iceland and ourselves taken by everyone’s eyes. We were running around everywhere with indescribable excitement, having the beautiful landscape of Iceland as background. I could see myself with an elated face that I have lost for a while and my friends fully enjoying unforgettable moments, leaving behind their lonely and harsh moments of studying abroad. When we go on a trip, we usually try to record every moment with our smartphones or digital cameras as if we don’t want to forget any of the moment. However, those overwhelming photo files are carelessly stored inside external hard drives or cloud servers, and precious moments are left forgotten just like dusty books on a high shelf. I would rather want those moments to be refined in the way I want to remember the trip than just to be faded away by time. I believe this way of remembering time will definitely enrich and deepen my life and time itself. I personally think that it is better to record my trip with videos than with photos as video can contain more of ourselves with pure emotions and local vibes of where I travel. For this reason, ever since I edited a final version of the video based on material recorded during the trip to Iceland in 2016, taking videos and making a video of my trip has become my ritual after a trip.
When I showcased the video of our journey in Iceland to my friends for the first time, they told me unanimously that it was so grateful to have them indulge in beautiful reminiscence again.

아이슬란드, 우리 인생에 이 땅을 밟을 기회가 몇 번이나 주어질까? 머나먼 스칸디나비아 반도, 심지어 그로부터 1,000km 이상 떨어진 곳에 있는 작은 북유럽의 섬나라. 많은 사람이 아이슬란드의 대자연, 설원, 오로라를 보는 것을 꿈꾸며 아이슬란드 여행을 마음속 버킷리스트로 품고 있지만, 막상 너무나도 먼 거리, 한국에서 주어지는 짧은 휴가 기간, 그리고 고생스러울 것이 뻔한 여행 스케줄 때문에 그 꿈을 이루는 것을 주저하게 되는 경우가 많다. 2016년 봄, 그 당시 나는 핀란드 헬싱키에 거주하며 학업에 전념하고 있었다. 봄학기를 마치면 핀란드를 떠나 다시 한국으로 돌아갈 예정이었던 나는 본능적으로 느끼고 있었던 것 같다. 마음속에 품고 있던 아이슬란드 여행이라는 버킷 리스트를 이루려면, 이번 봄의 부활절 휴가가 마지막 절호의 기회라는 것을. 사실 누군가와 이러한 버킷 리스트를 공유하고 있지는 않았지만, 누군가의 입에서 아이슬란드 여행을 추진하자는 말이 나오자마자 무척이나 빠르게 그 여행 멤버가 구성되었고, 우리가 아이슬란드에서 빌릴 수 있는 최대 크기의 9인승 승합차에 맞춰 한국인 유학생 9명이 최종적인 아이슬란드 원정대가 되었다.
9명의 원정대 멤버가 모두 서로를 잘 아는 사이는 아니었다. 몇몇은 매일같이 만나는 절친한 사이도 있었고, 여행 당일 처음 만난 사람도 있었지만 모두 아이슬란드 여행이라는 하나의 꿈을 위해 모인 아이슬란드 원정대였다. 다들 북유럽에 살면서 그 환경과 문화에 익숙해져 있었지만, 아이슬란드라는 그 이름 자체에서 느껴지는 설렘과 떨림은 다른 곳에서 느꼈던 기대감과는 사뭇 달랐다. 그래서 아이슬란드로 출발하는 여행 당일 모두가 모인 자리에서, 나는 흥분된 가슴을 부여잡고 원정대 멤버들에게 외쳤다. 각자가 가지고 온 스마트폰과 디지털카메라로 최대한 ‘영상’을 많이 찍어두라고. 그리고 그 영상을 우리가 다 같이 공유하면, 우리 원정대가 아이슬란드를 일주하는 모습을 담은 영상을 모아 하나의 기록물로 만들겠다고 선언했다. 이 선언과 함께 우리의 원정은 시작되었고, 일주일간의 다사다난한 아이슬란드 링로드 투어는 북부 지방에서의 폭설 속 조난 사고를 제외하면 큰 사고 없이 마무리 지어졌다.
하지만 막상 여행이 끝난 후, 모두가 각자의 일상으로 빠르게 복귀하게 되면서 정신없는 나날을 보내게 되었고, 그때 그 여행의 기억은 일상의 시간과 패턴 속에 점점 희석되어 갔다. 나는 핀란드에서의 생활을 마치고 한국으로 돌아왔고, 원정대 멤버들도 각자의 목표와 목적에 따라 뿔뿔이 흩어지게 되었다. 그 이후로 우리는 예전만큼 연락하거나 만나는 일은 없었다. 그러나 우리의 소원한 관계에도 불구하고 여전히 헬싱키 공항에서 호기롭게 외쳤던 선언은 항상 내 마음속 부채로 남아있었다. 긴 시간이 지나 그 누구도 그 선언을 기억하지도 못하고 관심조차 없었을지라도 나는 내 입으로 내뱉은 말에 대한 책임을 지고 싶었다. 무엇보다 종종 머릿속에 떠오르는 아이슬란드에서의 아련한 기억을 하나로 모아 기록으로 남기고 싶기도 했다. 여행이 끝나고 3년이 훌쩍 지난 시점에서야 드디어 나는 자리에 앉아, 오래된 외장하드에 담아둔 사진과 영상들을 하나씩 열어 보면서 하나의 영상으로 편집하게 되었다.
원정대 멤버들이 기록한 영상 속에는 각자의 시선에서 담은 아이슬란드의 풍경과 그 속에서 흥분된 감정을 숨기지 못한 채 뛰어다니는 우리의 모습들이 있었다. 한동안 잊고 있었던 나의 행복한 얼굴도 그 속에 있었고, 당시 유학 생활로 지쳐 있던 친구들 또한 외롭고 고단했던 순간들을 잠시나마 잊고, 아이슬란드에서 우리가 함께하는 시간을 만끽하는 모습도 보았다. 사실 우리는 여행의 순간들을 잊지 않기 위해 스마트폰과 디지털카메라로 끊임없이 기록하곤 하지만, 결국 바쁜 일상 속에서 도저히 감당할 수 없는 데이터가 되어 외장하드나 클라우드에 속에 방치된 채, 높은 서랍의 먼지 쌓인 책처럼 오래도록 들춰보지도 않게 된다. 그래도 이 기억을 쓸쓸히 잊히게 두기보다 여행의 여운이 미처 가시기 전에 나 자신이 그 여행을 느낀 방식대로 밀도 있게 남기는 방법을 찾아낸다면, 내 지난 시간이 현재의 나의 삶을 더 값지고 깊이 있게 만들어 줄 수 있지 않을까 생각했다. 나는 정적인 이미지인 사진보다 영상이 사람들의 표정과 그 여행지의 매력을 더 잘 담아낼 수 있을 거라고 생각해서, 이 아이슬란드 여행 영상을 완성한 이후부터 되도록 여행지에서 많은 영상을 남기고 그것을 바탕으로 하나의 영상으로 만들게 되었고, 이것은 여행을 기억하는 일종의 의식이 되었다.
그동안 연락하지 않고 지내던 원정대 친구들에게 편집한 아이슬란드 여행 영상을 처음으로 보내주었을 때, 모두 입을 모아 내게 얘기해주었다. 다시금 그 추억 속의 우리를 떠올릴 수 있게 해줘서 고맙다고...

오슬로와 헬싱키에서 공간 디자인을 공부하고, 서울에서 인테리어 디자이너로 일하고 있다. 컴퓨터 앞에 앉아 일하는 것보다 직접 손으로 무언가를 만드는 것에 더 즐거움을 느껴 요즘은 목공에 푹 빠져 있다.
