It was not long after moving from Grenoble to Paris. Contrary to the common admiration towards Paris as the best travel destination, the most romantic city, and the city you must visit at least once in your lifetime, I could hardly agree with this. School, home, school, home. Having lived in a small town and suddenly entering a big city, little did I know people in this city, and it was enough to feel more and more helpless with repeated routines between school life and home. The beautiful scenery and the Parisians I encountered on the street had become monotonous daily routines with nothing special anymore. There were no genuine friends I could meet without burdens, nor was I inclined to meet them. In the glamorous, bustling city, I was a stranger indeed. Though I always felt obliged to carry a camera with me, this had become burdensome and gotten me worn out. That day, I was walking aimlessly down the street, as usual, and then it suddenly stopped me in my tracks at the small alleyway. In the summer of Paris 2019, I would never have thought of it becoming my sanctuary.

"Skate Park de Léon Cladel." Located in an alley between skyscrapers in the 2e arrondissement of Paris, it is a skate spot where a half-pipe, a structure used in skateboarding, is installed. Residents rarely pass by here; mostly tourists are clicking the shutter at the skaters out of curiosity. Ever since I found this place, every day I bought a cup of coffee and occupied the windowsill of a building next to the alley as if going to work every morning. I was just sitting there putting my camera next to me the entire day. I didn’t go there expecting that a special episode or event would happen. There was just me watching the skater boys immersed in one movement before my eyes all day long. They repeated the same action dozens and hundreds of times to execute the technique they wanted to achieve. Sometimes keeping a close watch on them made me really tired, as it was so predictable and boresome.

However, as I kept continuing to watch them for days and even weeks, I could sense that the boys were growing little by little, day by day, step by step. More interestingly, I couldn't figure out why this brought cheer to me in a way. Though I have been studying abroad for more than two years by myself, I couldn't see my own growth. I always felt stagnant, and the reality of chasing an unreachable future made me anxious. It felt like my friends in Korea have already gone through several life stages and became an adult the society defines, but I was just like a child who was no different from the boys I was looking at. But those who seemed like ten years or maybe much younger than me seemed to teach me somehow. Watching them every day, taking pictures of them, and talking to each other with whom I got acquainted, I practiced finding something I thought I had lost.

In this way, skater observation expanded from the alleys in the 2e arrondissement of Paris to Palais de Tokyo, and Place de la République. As an alien, I felt stagnant and thus did not feel a sense of belonging to the big city, feeling on edge and isolated. However, since I tried to take a step back and made close observation of the skaters through the lens of a stranger, their growth began to catch my eyes. This change was made through me, who is aware that I am a total stranger. Admitting and recognizing my identity as an international student, an ephemeral inhabitant, and a traveler who will leave Paris after a while served as an opportunity to look back at myself and my surroundings, to gain the power to live my life, and by extension, to get my lost self back.

Though I'm staying in Korea for a while due to the pandemic, it would be the very first place I want to visit when I go back to Paris. An alleyway where it was so noisy and dangerous that some people wanted to avoid was the most precious and comfortable haven in the city for me. This was a place that also made me face the helplessness and boredom that I, as a foreigner, experienced head-on, which eventually made me look back at myself. Observing the city you live in from a traveler's unfamiliar perspective—your trip may already start from here.

"Skate Park de Léon Cladel."

Jiseong Shin
Jiseong is studying photography in Paris, France. Her interests lie in capturing everyday moments. In the summer of 2019, she encountered random skaters on the street while walking through Paris. Based on this, she later published a photo book, 『Peep (2020)』, where she experimented with the photographs of skaters by using lithographic printing to produce various color combinations. Currently continuing to work in South Korea, she focuses on the subjects: the elderly and the passage of time.
