    To design oneself is partly to design the digital representation of oneself. One of the most obvious ways of doing this is through manipulating our facial images and videos by the use of face filters. Face filters enable us to digitally become something else, beyond the boundaries of person, gender, race, age, species. Noam Youngrak Son experimented with this by using the face filter Becoming Noam (2020), which applies their facial image on the face of other people. It provides them an opportunity to act or to make statements as the artist themselves, who in their turn can reproduce and spread themself online.

    Your digital identity may not only be owned by yourself but shared among a wide range of people who can access the face filter. The self becomes polyvocal and self-design becomes a collective task with distributed agency and responsibility. The users of the face filter could be considered as a committee, an organisation of multiple "themselves" to make various political decisions that one encounters while portraying themself online. Self-design, which seemed like a black box, becomes more transparent and democratic through this process.

    스스로가 디지털미디어에서 어떻게 표현되는지를 디자인하는 가장 직접적인 방법은 페이스필터를 사용해서 얼굴의 이미지를 바꾸는 것이다. 페이스필터는 개인, 성별, 인종, 나이, 종의 경계를 넘어 우리를 다른 무언가로 만들어준다. 디자이너 노암 영락 손은 스스로의 얼굴을 다른 사람들의 얼굴에 씌우는 Becoming Noam (2020) 페이스필터를 활용하여 이것을 실험했다. 그것은 사람들이 아티스트 본인의 정체성을 도용해 행동하거나 주장할 수 있게 만들며, 동시에 그 정체성을 온라인 공간에서 재생산하며 확산시킨다.

    이러한 맥락에서 개인의 디지털 아이덴티티는 온전히 개인의 것이 아닌 페이스필터에 접속 할 수 있는 모두의 것이다. 자아는 다양한 목소리로 표현되고, “셀프 디자인”은 분산된 권한으로 주도되는 공동의 업무가 된다. 이 페이스필터의 사용자들은 여러명의 “나”들이 다양한 정치적 결정을 내리는 공동체, 즉 위원회를 사변적으로 형성할 수 있다. “셀프 디자인”은 이 과정을 통해 더 투명하고 민주적인 과정으로 탈바꿈한다.

Noam Youngrak Son
    Noam Youngrak Son is an Eindhoven/Ghent-based designer. They inscribe myths for the underrepresented in various mediums, from books to performances to 3d printed sextoys. They are excited about the unexpectedness that a well-designed fiction can open up, and the critical political discussions that it may cultivate. They use their capability as a designer to visualise and materialise the setup for the technological & ecological bodies that one inhabits to play a role in their fiction.

    노암 영락 손은 아인트호벤과 겐트에 거주하는 디자이너이다. 그는 책, 퍼포먼스, 3D프린트된 섹스토이 등 다양한 매체를 통해 미약한 목소리를 가진 이들을 위한 신화를 기술한다. 그는 픽션으로부터 이어지는 불확실성과 정치적이고 비평적인 대화에 대해 주목한다. 디자이너로서 노암 영락 손의 역량은 그의 픽션에 등장하는 기술적이고 생태적인 주체들을 시각화/물질화하는데 활용된다.
